Jaw and Facial Management
Jaw and facial growth occur primarily during the childhood years. Experts recommend that by ages 3 to 8 a child should be evaluated for both orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic treatments. In the case of children, the process of straightening teeth (orthodontics) should include the management of jaw and facial bone growth (dentofacial orthopedics). Often, before beginning orthodontics, the dentist will complete treatments to straighten and balance the jaws growth to ensure proper alignment. When jaw and facial management is undertaken, special dental appliances are used to guide the bone’s development. Dentofacial orthopedic treatments are often done as part of the orthodontic straightening.
Often both orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics are accomplished at the same time. In some cases, based on a patient’s evaluation, teeth straightening may follow jaw and facial management.
Treatment plans are tailored to each patient and are developed following an evaluation by a dentist skilled in orthodontic procedures.
