Often dentures, whether full, partial, or bridges are not satisfactory for the improved smile and cosmetic results a patient is seeking. In these cases, to solve the problem of missing teeth, dental implants may be the answer. Dentures can slip while talking or eating causing slurred speech or difficulty getting through a meal. Once a treatment plan has been outlined by your dentist at Village Park Dental, the patient is ready for the first step in the procedure. A small titanium post is inserted into the bone socket of the missing tooth to fill the gap. The jawbone heals and grows around the post, holding it securely in the jaw. Next, a second small post called an abutment is fastened to the anchored post already positioned in your jaw. This second post serves as the receiver and anchor for the replacement tooth. Once this second post is in place, it is ready to receive the new tooth.

Meanwhile, the dentist must make the replacement tooth which is molded from an impression made of all the patient’s teeth. The color of the replacement tooth is matched to the patient’s natural tooth color and the replacement tooth, called a crown, is manufactured, usually by an outside lab. Once the replacement tooth is ready, it is cemented to the abutment post which holds if firmly in place. When the crown is secure, the implant looks, feel, and functions like any other of the patient’s natural teeth.
