Preventative Dentistry Cypress, Texas 77429
They say ‘prevention is the best medicine’ and we at Village Park Dental, subscribe to that sentiment. We encourage all our patients to practice good oral hygiene at home and schedule appointments for periodic exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and other preventative measures.
The dentists at Village Park Dental strongly recommend using fluoride enhanced toothpaste, oral rinses, and in-office fluoride treatments for the prevention of tooth decay, especially in children. Research has shown that fluoride acts to add minerals to tooth enamel which strengthens the tooth material and helps prevent or, even, reverse tooth decay.
Tooth decay (caries) occurs as a result of bacterial action in the mouth. Bacteria interact with sugars and starches from the food we eat which, in turn, produces acids. These acids then react with tooth enamel causing the enamel to lose minerals from its structure. As the tooth structure loses more and more minerals, the tooth surface weakens and eventually breaks down. Tooth decay then follows.
Fluoride works to add minerals back into the structure of the tooth material. This process (called remineralization) strengthens the enamel and, in some cases, may even reverse early stage tooth decay. For patients with moderate to high risk of decay, the dentists at Village Park Dental follow practices recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA). These recommendations include the in-office application of fluoride treatments as a preventative against tooth decay. Fluoride toothpaste and mouthwashes are also recommended for all patients. Both clinical research and long-term results have shown the benefits of using fluoride as part of an oral health program. If you have questions or concerns about fluoride or fluoride treatments, visit with our dentists. They are happy to discuss fluoride and fluoride treatments for you and your family.
