Tooth decay (caries) occurs as a result of bacterial action in the mouth. Bacteria interact with sugars and starches from the food we eat which, in turn, produces acids. These acids then react with tooth enamel causing the enamel to lose minerals from its structure. As the tooth structure loses more and more minerals, the tooth surface weakens and eventually breaks down. Tooth decay then follows.

Fluoride works to add minerals back into the structure of the tooth material. This process (called remineralization) strengthens the enamel and, in some cases, may even reverse early stage tooth decay.
